Today was the first practice since Miami’s 20-14 win over the Bucs. With the Dolphins at the half way point of the preseason, they still have quite a few questions that need to be answered. Monday’s practice didn’t answer many of the questions but it did let us know what Joe Philbin and his coaching staff are thinking.
Charles Clay is back practicing with the Dolphins. Today was only a walkthrough but Clay was walking through everything with the first team offense. Last week there was some talk of Clay possibly missing week one, it’s clear now that Clay was kept out because he was a little banged up. I believe if this was the regular season Clay would be listed as Probable/Active, it is still up in the air if he will play in Miami’s game Saturday against the Cowboys.
Mike Pouncey seems to be killing his rehab assignment. Most people were saying he would miss about 4/6 weeks in the regular season, it seems like he may be back much sooner.

Pouncey will be needed to help the run game, especially with how bad the guards played against the Bucs. Miami had -5 rushing yards in the first half. In an attempt to fix that, Dallas Thomas was replaced by Shelley Smith as the first string right guard today at practice. It will be interesting to see if Billy Turner also gets some snaps with the first team.
Last year the Dolphins spent a 5th round pick on a kicker, that would usually mean he would be a lock to be a teams kicker for a few years. Sturgis terrified me at times last year, he had stretches where he looked really good but would follow them up with streaks in which 23 yard field goals wouldn’t be a lock.
Now that the Dolphins have a new GM (One that didn’t draft him) and the fact that Sturgis has a nagging hamstring injury, the roster spot is no longer a lock. The Dolphins brought in John Potter, who went 2/2 on field goals drilling a 48 and a 51 against the bucs.
The Dolphins return to practice tomorrow at 12:15 PM. It will be interesting if Clay continues to work with the first team and if Sturgis doesn’t return soon, it may be the end of the road for him with the Dolphins.
