The Arizona Cardinals activated safety Tyrann Mathieu from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list according to Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. Mathieu is able to begin practicing immediately and would bolster the defensive backfield and give the Cardinals a much-needed positive on defense.
It doesn’t offset the loss of defensive tackle Darnell Dockett to a torn ACL earlier this week. Mathieu tore his ACL and LCL in December against the St. Louis Rams.
It remains to be seen exactly when Mathieu will see game action. It could be as early as Sunday when the Cardinals host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday Night Football. The initial thought was Week 5 after the team’s bye week but he could be ready for the regular season opener against San Diego.
In a related move, defensive tackle Alameda Ta’Amu was activated from the PUP list. He tore his ACL in the season finale against San Francisco. Ta’Amu provides depth behind Dan Williams at nose tackle.
