Broncos hire Vance Joseph as HC: Reactions, what it means

The Denver Broncos head coaching search didn’t last that long at all.

According to many sources, including ESPN’s Adam Schefter, John Elway has found Gary Kubiak’s replacement (and the Broncos third head coach since 2015), in former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph:

Joseph’s defense in Miami was ranked fourth-last in the NFL, but it did enough to help the Dolphins reach their first playoff game since 2008. Joseph was the Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach from 2014-15 and Houston Texans defensive backs coach from 2011-2013. He was also a Colorado Buffaloes coach in two different stints.

What it means

Many thought the Broncos would hire Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, since his father Mike was previously Denver’s head coach that guided them to Super Bowl 32 and 33 victories. Shanahan’s offensive mastermind would have also been a huge help to the Broncos woes on that side of the ball.

Joseph has plenty of experience on both sides of the ball when it comes to coaching, and the Broncos need a coach who can balance it out on offense and defense.

The next order of business is for Joseph to decide if defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will be back in the Mile High City.
