In our new weekly series, the staff of Cover32/Ravens will tackle a subject and give our patented, always unsolicited, never coordinated opines. Welcome to the Cover32/Ravens Roundtable.

Today’s Question: Which NFL Combine Day will the Ravens Coaching Staff deem as most important?

Rich Hallstrom, Assistant Editor:
Based on how the season ended, the Baltimore Raven coaching staff will be looking toward Monday, March 6th when they get a chance to look at one of the deepest defensive backfield crops of talent in recent memory. I think if the Ravens could do it they would sign some of those top prospects that day. It might be the day Sidney Jones takes his first steps on a trip to Baltimore.

Holt Smith, Lead Intern:

I think this is going to be the year of the playmaker for the Ravens. Offensively I think issues can be addressed via free agency, but for the defense it’s not so simple. I’m going to have to roll with Rich on this one. The Organization will be looking for the next lockdown defensive back in this years draft rather than the star receiver. Youth will invigorate the aging defense and having a potential 3 fisted punch with Jimmy Smith, Sidney Jones, and Tavon Young in the slot could be deadly.

Chris “Braven” Brown, Editor:

Holt is on to something when it comes to the moniker, “Playmaker.” I, too, think that the staff will be hunting fiercely for difference-makers. I just don’t think that the first one will come off of defense. Remember, the Ravens pass defense was very highly ranked for most of the season, they finished in the top tenĀ (9th). While they truly do need another corner, and/or safety, what they really need is a brash leader on both sides. Therefore, I think that Saturday will be their most important day, to scope out the WRs. There are some dynamite options available–Clemson’s Mike Williams is an absolute monster who would change things right away–but I really like the whole package of our Path 2 the Pros highlight player, Ryan Switzer out of UNC. (Sidney Jones is the other highlight player for #P2theP.) Either way, that is my guess: Coach Harbaugh and the fellas will be keen to see the WR workouts, come the weekend.
