Cornerback A.J. Bouye is a target of the Philadelphia Eagles

Despite only possessing limited amounts of cap space, the Philadelphia Eagles look to have targeted free agent cornerback A.J. Bouye.

With neither of the team’s starting cornerbacks from 2016 returning to the team next season, the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to pursue quite a few secondary players this offseason. Near the top of the free agent cornerbacks list, former Texans corner A.J. Bouye now looks to be the Eagles first target with the free agency tampering period now underway.

Reportedly speaking to the player following the period’s opening on Tuesday, Bouye would be a great target for the Eagles to sign this offseason. At only 25 years of age, Bouye is both young and talented, making him likely to be one of the most sought after free agents this offseason. Considering his young age, it is also possible that the player has yet to reach his potential.

Starting 11 games last season for Houston, Bouye recorded career highs in tackles, sacks and pass deflections. While the 11 games starting were the most in a single season for him, Bouye did have some experience starting from his past seasons with the team. While he could just be a one-season wonder, Bouye does possess the traits that the Eagles are looking for in a new starting cornerback.

Young, talented and able to play strongly in man coverage, Bouye also possess the size needed to take on some of the NFL’s bigger receivers. That said, all these traits will make him a highly wanted man this offseason. Already expected to receive a deal in the range of $11.4 million per season, Bouye could be a player that is out of the Eagles price range.

Currently possessing only $11.2 million in cap space, the Eagles will have to make some moves this offseason or really backload Bouye’s contract to make this work. We must also remember that this $11.2 million must also be used to sign the team’s draft picks this offseason. Unless the Eagles have another card up their sleeve, I don’t see how the team will sign Bouye.

That said, I have seen more shocking things in the past. With multiple players still on the roster, the Eagles could still have some roster cuts or even trades on the way. However, until such occurrences happen, the likelihood that the Eagles can sign A.J. Bouye will remain relatively low.
