Good news New England Patriots’ fans. As a fan, in free agency, you virtually have no control over the future of your favorite franchise. You never really do but free agency is the ultimate guessing game and you have to put faith in the team’s leadership. Luckily, this free agency, Bill Belichick has nailed it and has had his best free agency in years. Add in that Dont’a Hightower has signed, once again, with the Patriots and you’ve got reassurance that Old Bill hasn’t lost his touch.

Dont’a Hightower has been a rock solid player coming out of Alabama. High expectations landed on Hightower’s shoulders when he was drafted by the Patriots. Coming from a Nick Saban defense, Belichick had a good idea what he would be getting with Dont’a Hightower and Hightower has delivered.

Hightower has become one of the leaders of the New England Patriots’ defense. Two amazing plays in Super Bowl victories, tackling Marshawn Lynch on the goal line and strip sacking Matt Ryan, have helped write the history of the modern Patriots. Those two plays changed the very outcome of two championships and without Hightower, who knows what would have become of those games.

Dont’a Hightower has signed a well deserved four-year, $43.5 million deal with the New England Patriots. Of that healthy investment, $19 million is guaranteed. Information via

Hightower met with both the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. Ultimately, Dont’a Hightower chose to stay in Foxboro.

So what does this mean for the foreseeable future of the New England defense? Well, having an excellent linebacker in Dont’a Hightower means a lot. I mean, understanding New England Patriots’ culture and delivering on the hype accumulated from Alabama are both impressive feats. Hightower has been a leader in the Patriots’ locker room and is another excellent signing by the Patriots.

Glad to see Hightower back in a New England uniform.
