The 49ers are hoping that Marquise Goodwin's elite athleticism will translate to big plays on the football field in 2017.

The San Francisco 49ers depth chart at wide receiver has gone through tremendous change since the new front office showed up. Among the starting spots now up for grabs since John Lynch brought in twenty new free agents before the draft and and ten draft picks, we will analyze the position battle for the second wide receiver spot between Marquise Goodwin and Aldrick Robinson.

When Shanahan was the offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins in 2013, Pierre Garcon owned the middle of the field and hauled in an NFL best 113 receptions. The next year he teamed him up with speedy DeSean Jackson who had over 20 yards per reception for the season. The number one receiver position seems to be locked down by Pierre Garcon and with Jeremy Kerley receiving an extension from the new front office, the slot position appears to be filled as well. The number two receiver spot is up for grabs, however, and it is one of supreme importance for Shanahan’s offense. It seems like Marquise Goodwin and Aldrick Robinson, two very similar guys around 5’10” and the 180 pound range with crazy speed, are the top contenders for the 49ers number two receiver in 2017.

Marquise Goodwin
Marquise Goodwin has some elite athleticism which he demonstrated by representing the USA in the 2012 Olympic games in the long jump. Marquise’s personal bests in track and field are a 27-04 long jump and a 10.2 in the 100 meter. He is more than just a track guy however, which he constantly demonstrates in the run game. Marquise is not a get in terms of blocking but shows his love of contact by trying to almost hurt defenders. At times this works against Goodwin when he misses, but clearly this is a John Lynch type of guy at receiver.

Aldrick Robinson
Aldrick seems to have the slight edge in this position battle, having played in Shanahan’s system in Washington and Atlanta. Aldrick has never been able to nail down a starting spot in the past but has somehow managed to maintain an 18 yard per reception average for his career. Just to put those numbers into perspective, if Robinson could keep that average up and have just 56 receptions on the year he would have over 1000 receiving yards on the year, a feat that no one on the 49ers has accomplished in the last two years.

The 49ers will have much better receiving options in the upcoming year and both Marquise Goodwin and Aldrick Robinson have a chance to land the number two wide receiver starting spot. The difference between the number two and number three receiver was 49 targets during the Atlanta Falcon’s 2016 season under Shanahan.  While both players will contribute this year, the winner of this fight will become a 49er house hold name with fantasy relevance.
