Predicting the 49ers win total in 2017

49ers faithful expect and hope that San Francisco will improve on a 2-14 campaign from last season.

The Las Vegas sportsbooks have set the San Francisco 49ers 2017 win total at 4.5 games and the Football Outsiders post-draft predictions estimated 5.2 wins for the 49ers in 2017. Just to compare, Vegas set the 49ers 2016 win total at 5.5 games, Football Outsiders predicted 4-12, we predicted they would go 3-13 and the 49ers actually finished 2-14. With a new front office and an easier schedule than last year, the 49ers could exceed expectations but we will take a look at each game to make our 2017 win total prediction.

September 10th vs Panthers: The Panthers came off their NFC title winning season with a dud, finishing last in the NFC South in 2016. While the opening game of the season can yield unexpected results, we expect the Panthers to rebound in 2017 and have to choose Cam Newton and a Panther defense –which added Captain Munnerlyn, Julius Peppers and Mike Adams– over Brian Hoyer and the 49ers defense. Prediction: 49ers lose

September 17th at Seahawks: The 49ers have not won in Seattle since December 24th 2011. Even though we feel that the 49ers are on the rise, we can’t yet quite bring ourselves to predict a 49ers victory in Century Link Field. Prediction: 49ers lose

September 21st vs Rams: The Rams are having to regroup after a coaching transition and not having a first round draft pick in 2017 due to the Goff trade. The 49ers have had the Rams number at home the past two years and we see no reason that should not continue in 2017. Prediction: 49ers win

October 1st at Cardinals: The Cardinals did not meet the high expectations that were set for them in 2016, but a healthy Carson Palmer and Tyrann Mathieu could help them get back in contention this year. Even though the 49ers have played them tough in the desert the past two years, the excellence of David Johnson makes it hard to choose the 49ers to win this game in Arizona. Prediction: 49ers lose

October 8th at Colts: The Colts used their off season to revamp their front office and defense. By selecting Malik Hooker, Quincy Wilson and Tarell Basham, the Colts added players who could impact the defense as soon as this season. Considering Andrew Luck’s skill and this being a home game for the Colts, we’ll take the Colts in this one. Prediction: 49ers lose

October 15th at Redskins: Adding Terrelle Pryor won’t make up for the Redskins loss of DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon or the lack of direction in their running game. And while the Reskins defense will welcome Jonathan Allen, Ryan Anderson and D.J. Swearinger, this is a young unit that might not see dividends immediately. Considering the revenge factor for Kyle Shanahan returning to his old team that also fired his father, and facing the quarterback he once coached and still covets, we can see the possibility of an upset here. Prediction: 49ers win

October 22nd vs Cowboys: The 49ers-Cowboys rivalry has a lot of history and the 49ers almost made a game of their meeting last year (until the second half), but the Cowboys have too much firepower on both sides of the ball to expect anything other than a Cowboys win in this game. Prediction: 49ers lose

October 29th at Eagles: The Eagles offense was held back by Carson Wentz in 2016 but their defense was significantly better than the 49ers and kept them in games. Carson will take a step forward this year with the addition of Alshon Jeffrey and the Eagles defense at home will be too much for the 49ers to overcome. Prediction: 49ers lose

November 5th vs Cardinals: The Cardinals are a significantly better team on paper than the 49ers. While it is possible that the 49ers could pull of the upset at home, we haven’t seen enough this off season to make that call and expect the Cardinals and David Johnson to be better this year than last. Prediction: 49ers lose

November 12th vs Giants: Aside from adding wide receiver Brandon Marshall and a TE in the first round of the draft, the Giants will showcase an unproven feature back in Paul Perkins. But an aging Eli Manning with Odell Beckham and Sterling Shephard should still have the edge on offense, combining with a significantly better defense that should help them win this game. Prediction: 49ers lose

November 26th vs Seahawks: Since the infamous Turkey on the 50 game, the 49ers have played some tighter contests against the Seahawks at Levis. Though the Seahawks signed Lacy, their offensive line has questions marks and I’m not convinced that the Legion of Boom isn’t on the decline. Considering that the 49ers new front office is likely wanting to make a point of stopping the bleeding against Seattle, I am expecting that the 49ers play inspired in this game and pull off the upset. Prediction: 49ers win

December 3rd at Bears: Two years ago, the 49ers and Gabbert pulled off the upset at Soldier Field. Last year, Kap, Gabbert and the 49ers got stomped by Matt Barkley in the snow to the tune of 26-6. Both teams are in transition at QB but since the Bears defense is slightly better and they are not going through a significant coaching change, we will give the edge to the Bears at home. Prediction: 49ers lose

December 10th at Texans: Even with a rookie quarterback in DeShaun Watson, the Texans quarterback play can’t get worse and their defense is light years ahead of the 49ers. Considering the home field advantage, we see Houston winning this game fairly easily. Prediction: 49ers lose

December 17th vs Titans: The Titans are a team on the rise who steadily improved over the 2016 season. With the edition of Eric Decker and Corey Davis at wide receiver to a backfield with DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry, Marcus Mariota’s offensive potency just increased to the point where we feel comfortable taking the Titans in this one. Prediction: 49ers lose

December 24th vs Jaguars: Each year we hear the Jags are on the rise, yet each year they disappoint. Maybe Leonard Fournette opens up the game to allow Blake Bortles to finally realize all that potential. But how many years do we give Bortles before we consider that he isn’t all that he was hyped up to be? Probably not in 2017. We could see the 49ers tanking if their season is determined, but the pride of the new front office will likely be playing for the best possible record. Prediction: 49ers win

December 31st at Rams: Last year the 49ers barely beat the Rams by a single point in LA to sweep them in 2016. This series has often gone back and forth and if we pick the 49ers to beat the Rams at home in 2017, chances are it would make sense for the Rams to beat the 49ers at home in 2017. Applying the same idea about new coaches playing for pride even if tanking is in play, we look for the Rams to show a little pride and get this win at home. Prediction: 49ers lose

According to our estimation, we predict that the 49ers improve upon their 2016 campaign with a 4-12 season in 2017. How do you think the 49ers will do in 2017? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.
