The losses that the Houston Texans experienced during this past offseason have been well documented. Quintin Demps and A.J. Bouye are no longer in Houston. The stop-gap solution so far has been rookies and unproven young players. The result? Several noticeable holes in the defensive backfield. A potential solution to the Texans secondary problem? Free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis.
The recent downturn in ability of Revis is a frequent topic of conversation. The he is too old and can’t cover anymore. If this story sounds familiar, it’s because it is. These statements are the exact same as what was said about Charles Woodson. A former shutdown cornerback who ended up converting to safety. Not only to help his team, but to extend his career. While Revis might not be able to contribute as a true number one cornerback anymore. Playing either the safety position or as a depth cornerback will help his cause and that of his future team.

There is no doubt that Revis is not what he used to be. However as a third cornerback on the Texans roster or as a safety, he would be a highly valued asset. Playing as part of a trio of Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson gives the Texans secondary a scary look. Very few quarterbacks would take chances throwing in the direction of any of the cornerbacks. Solidifying the front part of the secondary is an intriguing proposition. However not as an intriguing as Revis playing safety.
Pairing Revis with rising safety Andre Hal would greater solve the problem with the secondary. Houston has an enormous question mark at the safety position. Much like the aforementioned Charles Woodson, Revis is at a point in his career where a position change is the best course of action. Woodson was the same age before he made the position change. Entering his age 32 season, Woodson converted from cornerback to safety.
Much like Woodson, Revis still has the ability to play cornerback. But as they age and lose a step, the extra space between the safety and the offense is a benefit to an aging Revis. It will give Revis enough time to survey the offense and make a decision in regards to making a game changing play. There a few players in the league who are capable of playing the role of ball hawking safety, Revis is one of them.
The Texans are a team who have aspirations of a deep playoff run. The one Achilles heel which is not the quarterback position, is the safety position. Signing Revis to solve their safety issue would take Houston one step closer to being a serious contender. A step that not only the team wants, but the fans too.
