What If Tom Savage Stayed Healthy For Texans?

Would the Houston Texans had a shot with Tom Savage or was a loss to New England inevitable?

Late in the 2016 NFL season Tom Savage replaced Brock Osweiler as the starting quarterback of the Houston Texans. Savage impressed during his three games playing the quarterback position. Unfortunately for Savage and Houston, a concussion ended his run as the starter in week 17. What if Savage did not suffer a concussion?

When Savage replaced Osweiler in week 15 against the Jaguars, he rallied the team from a 13-0 deficit to win 21-20. This comeback win cemented the fate of Osweiler and Savage. Osweiler would be sent to the bench while Savage assumed the starting quarterback position. Over his next two starts the Texans went 1-1 and secured their spot in the playoffs.

Savage performed remarkably well during his time as the starting quarterback. Completing 63 percent of his passes. The one red flag with Savage’s play was the lack of touchdown passes, zero. However not throwing an interception is a positive. Very few quarterbacks in the NFL can go two and a half games without throwing an interception.

With the ball security of Savage compared to relative insecurity of Osweiler the Texans may have had a chance against the New England Patriots during the 2017 NFL Playoffs. The game was close in the first half with the Patriots holding a narrow four point lead. Osweiler managed to throw the game away (literally) in the second half. Throwing three interceptions which buried the Texans.

With hindsight it is possible to think that if Savage were healthy enough to play the playoff game that Houston could have had a chance. This is a possible scenario due to Savage being a good protector of the ball. This is a stark contrast compared to Osweiler who seems to give it away faster than a house giving away candy on Halloween.

Is it possible that Savage could have made the game more competitive? Absolutely. Would the Texans beat the Patriots? That is highly unlikely. After the performance we saw from Tom-Terrific in the Super Bowl, it is very unlikely that Houston was going to beat them, whether it was Tom Savage or Brock Osweiler as the quarterback. The game would have been more entertaining, however the end result would have been the same.
