The closer we get to August, the closer we get to training camp, and that makes me a very happy football fan. I thoroughly enjoy training camp; it’s like the month leading up to Christmas. However, I’m extra excited this year, as it’s my first as a Raiders fan.

I’ve already dipped my toe into the Raiders Twitter community, and it’s been delightful. The community appears friendly and welcoming, with a fun dash of trash talk. In addition, someone asked if whether my new Marquette King jersey is going to be pink, and the answer is no); I can’t wait to really engage with the community this season. Their enthusiasm has given me an idea of what I have to look forward to in the upcoming season.

There is, of course, seeing how Marshawn Lynch impacts the team. We got an idea of his talent and potential impact on the team during the organized team activities; I’m looking forward to seeing how he performs in a more sustained situation. In addition, it’s just going to be fun for me to see a player I like so much wearing my team’s uniform. This wasn’t the case when he played for the Seahawks.

I also think this is going to be a really amazing year for Amari Cooper. His first two seasons with the Raiders showed great potential. Also, his earlier comments about regarding dedication to making this season his best yet have put him on my radar. Cooper is a man of few words, and it will be interesting to see how this dedication plays out on the field.

Derek Carr, fresh from his contract extension, should also be a large presence at camp—I’m looking forward to seeing how he interacts with the other players, including, of course, Cooper. It may seem obvious, but a good quarterback is so crucial to the team—something I know all too well from my prior years as a Rams fan.

Rookie Obi Melifonwu will open eyes. Melifonwu is a rookie who had awesome stats at this year’s NFL Combine. He has pure ability, of course, and a good size to him. The year’s crop of rookies should play an important part of training camp. With that said, Melifonwu is one that I’ll definitely have my eye on as training camp starts.

It’s still, of course, a little while until camp starts—and longer still until the final roster is set. There’s really quite a lot for this new fan to look forward to!
