The Chiefs moved up 17 spots for Mahomes, a player who they believe is a future star at the quarterback position. His arm and athleticism contribute to his very high upside. However, he likely sits this year to develop behind current starter Alex Smith.

The acquisition of Mahomes puts Alex Smith in a similar spot. He held the starting gig in San Francisco before Colin Kaepernick eventually ousted him.

It’s a very odd situation for this team. But, the Chiefs know that you need a good quarterback to succeed in this league. Alex Smith is serviceable, but he hasn’t gotten them past the divisional round in his time in Kansas City.

The Chiefs believe in Mahomes, and this situation will be one to watch throughout the season.
