Is this Patriots team more stacked than the 2007 team?

No team in the history of the National Football League has ever gone 19-0. The 1972 Dolphins are still to date the only team in history to go an entire season without losing a game though the seasons were shorter back then as they finished 17-0. The 2007 team finished 18-1 after losing in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants and they were the closest to ever accomplish this feat.

With good reason, typically a team going 19-0 is not talked about very often yet here we are again with the New England Patriots getting all sorts of undefeated hype. Julien Edelman has shot that talk down as has several players, coaches, media members and more but the talk remains. Seemingly every day you see a new article, video or post asking whether the Patriots will be able to pull off the incredible feat.

The true reason behind this thought is simply how stacked this 2017 New England Patriots team is. Many have already labeled it has the best Patriots team ever, better than the 2007 team. Crowning them the champions over seven months before the big game. Yet a lot of this talk is absolutely warranted when you look at this roster from top to bottom. As many talked about, the Patriots looked like the team that went out and won the offseason. Looking at things from that perspective it is crazy to think about how a team could go and win an offseason right after winning the championship.

The same team that won the super bowl went out and got Brandin Cooks, Dwayne Allen. Kony Ealy. This team bolstered their offense even more than their top 5 offense last year with Gillissee joining their running back group that is extremely versatile. Rob Gronkowski is coming back healthy and ready to prove he is still the very best in the NFL and Cooks is quite easily the fastest wide receiver in football. Giving Tom Brady his best deep threat option since Randy Moss.

There is not a single weak spot on this offense and if ‘Tom Terrific’ plays at the same level he played at last year then there won’t be a defense in the league that can handle this offensive attack.

Realizing how incredible this offense is, typically the only way you would be able to beat that type of team is with a top tier offense attacking the defense. Yet the unbelievable part is that the Patriots have a top tier defense as well.

The Patriots boast a front seven that has been beefed up with offseason additions. Including, welcoming back the defensive leader in Hightower. Running against them will be an issue. So, teams would figure to pass against such a team. Good luck doing that as well because this team now boasts quite possibly the best secondary in football. With Gilmore, Butler, McCourty, and Harmon, it is stacked from top to bottom.

The Patriots also always have a solid secondary that is consistently disciplined. With so much talent, that won’t change either. This team is completely stacked by all metrics. It boasts a top 5 type of defense and special teams, possibly the very best offense all led by the best coaching staff in the game and quarterbacked by the greatest quarterback the game has ever seen. Will any team beat this team? On paper, probably not. However, the game doesn’t work that way.

Regardless, you can make a legitimate argument that this team is just as stacked as the 2007 nearly-perfect Patriots. If not better. That should scare the rest of the NFL. It should put fear in anybody’s eyes and should warrant undefeated talk because if any team can pull it off, it just might be this one.
