After an impressive showing against the Buccaneers, DeShone Kizer has been named the official Browns starter for Week 1 against the Steelers.

In a press conference following last night’s win against Tampa Bay, Browns Head Coach Hue Jackson had said that he needed to watch the tape, but that he liked Kizer’s potential and was fairly sure he would be the starter.

That news became official this morning as the Browns confirmed the news via Twitter.

Kizer’s Starting Debut

Kizer played the whole first half for the Browns on Saturday night, and judging by the stat line he was horrible. He went 6 for 18, throwing for 93 yards and an interception. A quarterback rating of 28.2 and a completion percentage of 33.3 percent.

It’s worth noting that the interception was off of a tipped pass, but Kizer was still staring his receivers down on many plays, something he’ll have to work on as he develops.

When it’s all said and done, the truth is that the statistics fail to tell the whole story about DeShone Kizer; he showed some remarkable playmaking abilities that the other quarterbacks on this Browns roster simply couldn’t match.

Kizer extended some plays with his legs, showed some improved pocket presence and also showed off his incredible arm strength. He exuded potential with every throw.

Kizer also showed budding chemistry with young receiver Corey Coleman.

Coleman had a great start to last season before injuries took a toll on his performance, so the Browns need him to become a bigger part of this offense if they want to move the ball this season. There is no question that Coleman has looked his best with Kizer throwing the ball to him.

Coleman would end the night with four catches for 66 yards.

As for Kizer, the praise is already starting to pile for the young rookie.

All that’s left for Kizer to do is go out and prove himself.
