50/50: a cash game where half the entries win almost double their money. The site host keeps a small %.
Asset Allocation: the money you’re spending on cash games vs. tournaments.
Bankroll: the amount of money you are willing to apply to DFS.
Buy-in: the entry fee of a contest you’re playing.
Cash games: a category of contests that groups safer games like 50/50’s, double ups and head-to-head contests together to indicate smaller pools / less risk. (A GPP is the other category)
Contest details: a menu item in all contests that defines the fantasy game that you’re interested in.
Contests: the fantasy games within a particular slate that you enter.
Contrarian: going against what you think will be the popular lineup picks in a contest. Used in large pool tournaments to differentiate your lineup.
DFS: daily fantasy sports where you buy-in to draft a team to compete that day/week for cash prizes or tickets to other contests.
Double up: a cash game where you enter a lineup for a chance to double your money. In a typical 23 entrant double up contest – 10 players win double the entry fee.
Exposure: the amount of money or # of times you’re using a particular player in your lineups. The higher the usage the more risk you’re taking in the event that player underperforms.
Fade: to avoid a player and strategically not draft him in any of your lineups.
Fish: a rookie, inexperienced DFS player that gets eaten by sharks.
Floor / Ceiling: the range of outcomes for a particular player. High floors are used in cash game lineup considerations while high ceilings are considered for GPP / tournaments.
Greenies: winners. You can also say “I hit green in 5 of 7 contests today!”
Grinder: playing every day as an investment with the majority of your asset allocation in cash games.
GPP: Guaranteed prize pools; has become synonymous with tournaments. It actually refers to the prize pool being guaranteed regardless of whether all the entries in the contest are filled.
Head-to-head: theoretically, a safe cash game where you play against 1 opponent. (Sharks know this too!)
Hedge: backing up your main entries with additional bets to reduce risk.
Late swap: when you can change a player for another right up until each game time.
Multi-entry: when a contest allows you to enter multiple lineups. A typical contest detail used in tournaments.
Ownership: the % of total entries in a contest that have a specific player.
Payout structure: a list of the prize won for each place that finishes green.
Paying up: strategically paying a premium for a certain player or position to build your lineup around.
Punt: using low salaried, but higher risk players to fill your roster around several higher priced players.
Rake: what the site makes for hosting all the contests. (~10%)
Shark: a skilled DFS player.
Single-entry: when a contest allows you to enter only one lineup.
Stacking: entering lineups with multiple players from the same NFL team – typically a QB/WR tandem.
Tournaments: high risk / high reward contests where the top finishers share the prize money. The highest payouts are concentrated at the very top. Also called GPP’s.
Train: entering the same lineup multiple times into a multi-entry tournament in order to “cover” more of the green payout finishing positions.
Triple up: a cash game with more risk (vs. double ups) where fewer players triple their entry fee.
Vegas line: how the sports books project each game to go re: over/under, spread and money line.
