It was announced by Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden that Indiana Hoosier Nate Sudfeld will be the starter for the final preseason game against Tampa Bay. Gruden said in his press conference that Sudfeld will play the entire game.
“It is a great opportunity to show what he can do,” Gruden said. John Keim of ESPN reports that Sudfeld still needs to earn a roster spot. Sudfeld, 23, was drafted by the Redskins in the 2016 NFL Draft with their 187th pick overall in the sixth round. He has not played a regular season snap with the team since being drafted but has played some games this preseason. He’s 11 of 23 passing and has thrown just over 130 yards in his two appearances split against the Ravens and Packers. He did not play last week against the Bengals.
The true test may not come this week against the Buccaneers as they will likely sit out their starters on defense as well, but if Sudfeld performs at a high rate in this evening’s Thursday night game, he may just make a name for himself to move into the second string spot over Colt McCoy. Remember, McCoy signed a 3-year contract back in 2016 that can be changed to 2 years.
The deal that McCoy signed was leaving him with a guaranteed $1.8 million that the Redskins would be willing to pay him. So even if he is on the roster or not, McCoy is getting paid. There will be room for Sudfeld as the Redskins quarterback, it isn’t just a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. That could be answered as soon as tonight’s Thursday night preseason finale.
