Blaine Gabbert got the start at quarterback for the Cardinals. He went five for ten for 51 yards. Now that does not seem that impressive, but it was much better than the numbers for fourth-string quarterback Trevor Knight. Knight went two for twelve for 19 yards and one interception. Knight was obviously a long shot to make the team, but putting up this type of performance is disappointing. Especially because he has shown some flashes of talent in the preseason. Knight could be a candidate for the practice squad for the Cardinals if he clears waivers. Some may disagree, but the Cardinals will keep three quarterbacks on the 53 man roster. Gabbert has played well to earn a spot and with Carson Palmer’s injury history, the Cardinals would be wise for doing so.
Elijhaa Penny looks like a running back determined to make the team. On 17 rushing attempts he rushed for 77 yards. He actually rushed for more yards than the Cardinals had through the air (65).On the first drive he picked up a first down after being hit behind the line of scrimmage. Right now Penny is definitely a candidate for the back-up role to David Johnson. Penny is actually the largest running back on the Cardinals roster. At 6-2 232 pounds, he is actually slightly bigger than Johnson. With Chris Johnson out of the picture in Arizona look for Penny to fight for that back-up role.
Most of the receivers looked terrible in this game. The quarterback play was not great either, but the receivers were not much help. A specific example would be Aaron Dobson. He had a deep pass coming his way and it ended up being incomplete. Dobson could not locate the ball in the air and showed zero jump ability to make a play over the defensive back. He later dropped another pass where the ball went in and out of his hands. There is no way that Dobson makes this team. The sixth wide receiver will most definitely be Brittan Golden. Golden was rested during this game, so it only makes sense that he would be safe to make the team.
Outside linebacker Alex Bazzie made a great play that resulted in a safety; ironically the only points the Cardinals would score. Bazzie has made his presence known very well this preseason. With back to back weeks with sacks, he is player that the Cardinals will have to make a tough choice on. A former Canadian football player, Bazzie has made a strong case to be the third weakside linebacker on the depth chart.
The other linebacker who has made a strong case is Cap Capi. In the preseason game against the Falcons he lead the team with six tackles and 1.5 sacks. He then followed that up with another nice game against the Broncos where he was very disruptive in the backfield. With a great name like Cap Capi and the ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks it is safe to say he has “CAP”tured the coaches’ attention.
With the preseason concluding the Cardinals now have to trim down the roster before their Week 1 game against Detroit. With Chris Johnson being released, who knows what other veteran players will also be let go. Stay tuned for more news and updates as Saturday will be a wild ride on the waiver wire!
