The saying goes, to be a good team in the NFL, you have to be able to run the football. So far during the 2017 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles have struggled to do so, which is going to be a big problem for them going forward.
Is the Eagles’ run game a problem?
This season, the Eagles have called just 33 run plays and on those run plays, they have only been able to manage 104 rushing yards. LeGarrette Blount has rushed the ball 14 times for 46 yards, Darren Sproles has rushed it 12 times for 50 yards and Wendell Smallwood has had just seven carries for eight yards. In two games this season, there has been no consistency with the run game, in fact, versus the Kansas City Chiefs, Blount did not even register one carry.
Knowing all of that, you can see that the Eagles not only have the Eagles had no success running the football, but you can also see that the Eagles still do not have a lead back who they can trust. A good team has one running back who takes the bulk of the carries, allowing him to build off of a good performance and rebound off of a bad one. For example, every running back in the top ten in yards this season, with the exception of two, has more carries by themselves as the Eagles do as a whole.
Going forward, if the Eagles do not establish the run game or get it going, they are going to struggle to win games. Late in the season, as a team, you must be able to run the ball, not only does it help out your quarterback, taking pressure off of him, but it also allows you to kill off games much easier.
The Eagles need to find a guy who they can trust to keep the drive alive and carry this team on his back. Whether it is Blount, Sproles, Smallwood, Corey Clement, the Eagles need a running game, more importantly, the Eagles need a running back who can give them the confidence they need when calling a run play. By no means is it easy, if it was, a lot more team would sustain success in this league, however, if the Eagles want to win, this run game needs to be addressed. Right now, it is a problem, however, the Eagles have the ability to nip this problem in the bud and they must take every measure to do so.
