BREAKING: Patriots ship Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have a new quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo, sending a 2nd round pick to New England.

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the much-anticipated trade of backup quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo has finally come to fruition. On Monday, the Patriots shipped the former second-round pick of the 2014 draft to San Francisco for a 2018 second round draft pick, as reported by Adam Schefter.

The two-time Super Bowl-winning backup now joins rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco with the winless 49ers.

Garoppolo trade rumors hit a fever pitch around draft time earlier this year with most pundits expecting Jimmy G to be moved to the Browns in exchange for the first overall selection. The 49ers were also a predicted destination for Garoppolo, especially considering the hiring of Shanahan, an offensive minded coach.

For the Patriots, it is now very clear that they too believe Tom Brady can play for several more seasons. Currently, the Patriots have no backup on the roster to Brady, something that will be addressed during the bye week. Known for his penchant for trade deadline drama, expect another corresponding move from Bill Belichick and the Patriots as most expect him to address the defense through the trade market.

As for what the future holds, the Patriots are now on the clock as they look for the successor to Tom Brady. After trading Jacoby Brissett earlier in the year, the Patriots have now shipped off both of their young signal callers. Both of whom won games for the Patriots last year in Brady’s absence.

In just over three seasons with the Patriots, Garoppolo appeared in 17 games, going 2-0. He completed 67 percent of his passes for 690 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions. He heads to the west coast a two-time Super Bowl Champion.
