Peyton Manning is hilarious, as was his response to questions about his future of playing football following his win over the San Diego Chargers in the AFC’s Divisional round.

But, if we’ve learned anything about Manning over the last two seasons, it’s that he doesn’t do — or say — anything without thinking it through first.

When Manning his offensive linemen or receivers weren’t on the same page last season, the quarterback called them out in front of sell-out crowds. After touchdown scores this season, he runs up to the receiver, many times telling his teammate something. Is Manning going over how the route could have been run better? We’ll never know for sure but it seems likely.

Similarly, when he quipped, “What’s weighing on my mind is how soon I can get a Bud Light in my mouth,” after being asked about his football future, it was funny but also calculated.

Manning could have said the name of any beer — there are 139 breweries across the state of Colorado alone — and gained praise from suds-sipping Coloradans.

But, he said Bud Light specifically for two reasons, and they’re both simple.

First and foremost, Bud Light is the official beer sponsor of the NFL this season. Saying the name of another beer brand could have landed Manning in some hot water with the league, though, he probably would have gotten away with it anyway.

Secondly — and maybe most importantly — as Beer Biz Daily reported, Manning owns a piece of two Anheuser-Busch distributors.

Of course, one of those great Colorado breweries — Left Hand (huge fan of their beer) — didn’t stop from trying to sway Manning’s beer-drinking decisions.

They sent Manning a care package of beer with a note reading, “Mr. Manning, Just like you, we decided to call an audible and change the play at the line to provide you with some Colorado craft beer from Left Hand Brewery. We feel it’s a better play call. We’ll be cheering you on against the Patriots! Go Broncos!”

Just like most Coloradans, who will be drinking a few cold ones during Denver’s huge AFC Championship game this Sunday.

In fact, I’m going out for a sixer of 400 Pound Monkey now.
