Come May 8, the Jaguars will be drafting a quarterback. Big surprise, right? It isn’t like Blaine Gabbert or Chad Henne were setting the world on fire, because they weren’t. In fact, they may have been fire extinguishers in shoulder pads and helmets.

Even Shad Khan, owner of the Jaguars, isn’t beating around the bush: “I think there’s no mystery that we’re going to be taking a quarterback and maybe two. [. . .] We have to get better at that [position].”

While saying the Jaguars will take a quarterback in the NFL draft is stating the obvious, there is a little something we can actually take away from Khan’s comments.

By telling us that Jacksonville may take two quarterbacks, Khan is giving us a good reason to believe that they will draft a quarterback with the third overall pick. Sure, they could pick up a couple of quarterbacks in the second and fifth rounds after selecting another elite talent in the first, but that wouldn’t reflect the importance Khan puts on quarterbacks.

“It’s one of the maxims in modern football,” Khan said. “The quarterback is key. You will get no debate on that. It’s 53 people on a team, but that one person really, really makes a difference.”

If they stand pat, the Jaguars are assured to have at least one of the top three quarterbacks remaining on the board: Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles. At this point, if Jacksonville doesn’t take a quarterback with their first-round pick it’ll be a surprise.
