Everything You Need to Know About the Miami Dolphins

Many NFL fans refer to the Miami Dolphins as the “most cursed team in football.” And while they may not have won a Super Bowl since 1974 or even been to one since 1985, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of reason for optimism if you’re a fan of America’s Finest. In recent years, the Dolphins have been competitive and even made the playoffs in 2016.

Miami Dolphins team history

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football team based in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens and are headquartered in Davie, Florida. The Dolphins were founded by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor-comedian Danny Thomas. They began playing in the AFL in 1966. The region had not had a professional football team since the days of the Miami Seahawks, who played in the All-America Football Conference from 1946 to 1949, and the Miami Marlins (later renamed the Baltimore Colts), who played in the AAFC from 1950 to 1951. For the first few years, the Dolphins’ full-time training camp and practice facilities were at Saint Andrew’s School, a private boys’ boarding prep school in Boca Raton.

In the summer of 1966, the Dolphins held their training camp at Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport. The Dolphins had a combined 15–39–2 record in their first four seasons under head coach George Wilson before Don Shula was hired as head coach. Shula was a Paul Brown disciple who had been lured from the Baltimore Colts after losing Super Bowl III two seasons earlier to the AFL’s New York Jets and completing the 1969 season with a 1–12–1 record. Today, the Dolphins’ headquarters reside in Davie, Florida, with the training facility located at nearby Nova Southeastern University. The Dolphins’ practice facility also houses the team’s training facility, which is called “The Residence.” The Dolphins’ headquarters and practice facilities are located in Davie. Before moving into The Residence, the Dolphins had spent over twenty years training and playing at Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport and St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton.

Team colours and logo

The Miami Dolphins team colours are aqua and orange. The team’s logo is a dolphin leaping out of the water. The team’s name comes from the city’s location near the Florida Keys, where dolphins are commonly found. The dolphin logo was also a favourite of the original owner Joe Robbie. Fans refer to the team as the “Fins,” a nickname the franchise has officially adopted. The Dolphins’ cheerleading squad is known as the “DolfinAction” (formerly the “Finsation”). The Miami Dolphins cheerleaders have been featured in two television movies and a documentary by ESPN. The franchise began in 1966 under founding owner Joe Robbie and head coach George Wilson with the formation of the American Football League.

Miami Dolphins’ home stadium

The Hard Rock Stadium is the home of the Miami Dolphins. The stadium is located in Miami Gardens, Florida, and has a capacity of 65,326. The stadium is a multi-purpose facility and is also the home of the Miami Hurricanes football team. The Hard Rock Stadium has been the site of three Super Bowls, most recently Super Bowl LIV in 2020.

Some of these include Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Dan Marino, and Jason Taylor. The Dolphins have always been a competitive team and have had great success in the playoffs. They are currently the only team in the NFL to have gone undefeated in a season. The Dolphins dominated the AFL during its first three seasons, going 32–2–2 in the regular season and 3–0 in the playoffs. They won the championship all three years and were undefeated in the first two Super Bowls before the AFL-NFL merger when they lost to the Dallas Colts in Super Bowl V. The next season was the only winning season that the Dolphins had during this period.
